2014 | Race 5 Results

Teams were greeted to torrential rain and monsoon conditions in the penultimate race of the 2014 championship. As the rest of the racing world tuned in to watch Lewis Hamilton clinch his 2nd Formula One title, the 5th round of the Ape series got underway.

Perhaps victims of over-tinkering, all of the championship runners would suffer reliability issues during the race; erstwhile championship favourites Ape Bee again running flat and at least 5 seconds off the pace from the start of practice and Slicedbread Racing suffering with fuel injection problems costing them around 2 seconds per lap.

Piaggio Commercial UK secured a dominant pole position, but a slow start allowed Slicedbread Racing to nip into the lead off the line. The next 25 minutes would see Owens and Dennis trade paint and the lead, with both also coming under intense pressure from Chris King in the leading hire class entry. After briefly gaining the lead before the the first pit stops approached, Piaggio Commercial suddenly came to a halt on the back straight. They would lose 3 laps before being able to rejoin the race after suffering a suspected soft seizure on their engine. Slicedbread Racing had the lead but with their engine failing the maintain revs, it wasn’t long before a charging King made his way past the faltering black machine.

With a driver change and it all to do, Piaggio Commercial set about regaining lost ground in the second half of the race. Unquestionably the quickest on track, Kelvyn Woodhead would eventually drag their once-ailing truck into 3rd place overall and almost regained the lead lap.

The day, however, belonged to Chris King and his team in the hire class who quickly mastered the tricky nature of the Ape and claimed victory over all with some very competitive lap times.

There’s just one race left to go in the 2014 championship and any one of 3 teams are in a position to win. Just 4 points separate the top 3, with only a point between 1st and 2nd place.

The showdown takes places at Rye House on 14th December 2014.

Update: Piaggio Commercial UK have been demoted from 2nd place after it was deemed that they failed to finish the race. The truck in which they started the race expired around lap 20 and they completed the race in a spare.
